Family and relatives
Mr. and Mrs. Lynch are parents of Nancy and Bill. Nancy is their daughter and Bill is their son.
Nancy is a sister to Bill and he is a brother to her. Nancy and Bill are siblings to each other.
When they are grown up, Nancy marries Steve and they become husband and wife. Bill marries Barbara and they are husband and wife too.
How does Steve relate to Mr. and Mrs. Lynch and how does Barbara?
Steve is the son-in-law to them and Barbara is a daughter-in-law. For Steve and Barbara Mr. and Mrs. Lynch are father-in-law and mother-in-law respectively.
Nancy has two children named John and Laura. Bill has two children too, a son and a daughter named Alan and Lisa. Alan, Lisa, John, and Laura are all cousins to each other. For Nancy, Bill’s children are nephew and niece. Also for Bill John is his nephew and Laura is a niece. In general Mr. and Mrs. Lynch are grandparents to all the children but specifically for their daughter’s children they are maternal grandparents and for their son Bill’s children they are paternal grandparents. So now Mr. and Mrs. Lynch have two grandsons and two granddaughters.
Can you tell how many families we talked about in this lesson?
In this lesson we talked about three families. The family of Mr. and Mrs. Lynch with their children Nancy and Bill, family of Nancy and Steve with their two children John and Laura, and the family of Bill and Barbara with their two children Lisa and Alan. They are all relatives to each other.
This completes a family and relatives.
