How to improve vocabulary?

How to improve vocabulary?

Vocabulary adds strength to a language. If you have a drive to learn a new language, esp. English, as a non-native, you must definitely give your personal time to it besides your regular English classes.

Remember- Determination and hard work leads to success.

Learning vocabulary can never be a tough task if you follow these few tips that have already been experienced by our enthusiastic students at SE-Connects Global.

Set a goal of learning 2  or 3 new words a day. However, if you have a great grasping capacity, you may choose up to 10 words a day. You will land up learning 300 words a month.  check if that would be too HIGH!

Here are the magical steps, just follow them.

1.The first and foremost thing is to analyze your level of English and get a book or reading material slightly higher than your level.  Let’s say your level is A1 then get the book which is A1+ or A2. This is because if you read something beyond your understanding in terms of language you will go crazy and give up  reading because you will understand nothing.

The best way is to pick the book, read and observe whether you can understand some part of it then buy it. Basically reading kids’ stories are very helpful.

                  2. Now, while you read the first chapter or a page, better sit at your desk with your diary and pen rather than lying in your bed and start jotting down all the new words you find while reading. Set a goal of collecting 5 to 10 words that you can easily hold in your mind.  Write down all the words in the diary or a notebook leaving some lines or space below each word. Now take a dictionary and check their meanings.

3. Write down the meanings understanding the content you read. This is because each word can have many meanings. Sometimes, they leave you in puzzle and you will end up writing down many words for just one. Of course knowing more synonyms will definitely help, nevertheless it may be tedious at this stage when you are learning a language and not decorating like an expert. Just pick up the meanings of each word matching the context.  Pick up a couple of synonyms which are comprehensive for additional knowledge.

4. After jotting down the words read the same text again and try to understand it with the meaning of the words or phrase you found.

Voila!  Your comprehension is much better the second time. Repeat!

The next step is to make sentences of your own with the new words. Never try to make the same sentences as that in the text. Connect these words in the real life situations.

Once you are done with a day-one study, keep the diary on the table. Look at the words again after 24 hours, after one week and after one month. This must be your everyday routine of reading a text, writing the words, finding the meanings, writing the sentences and looking at them regularly.

Listing down the words according to their classes can be an additional advantage For instance, if you come across a word ‘profession’ which is a noun kind, its adjective is professional, and professionally an adverb. You can check in the dictionary the class of the word which is written with the initial; for noun as n, for adjective as adj.

This practice will give you further ideas of the usage of a particular word.

In addition to reading regularly, you must also practice listening to keep you well acquainted with pronunciation, style, modulation and accent. Listening to the audios and watching knowledge based videos are more helpful than watching films. Listening to interviews and conversations are very supportive too.

Happy learning!
